You bring home a beautiful bouquet, trim the stems, and get everything arranged—then spot that slightly crinkly packet of “flower food” that seems too small for the whole vase. Homemade flower food is easier than you think, and you probably already have the ingredients.
Cut flowers need three basic things: sugar for energy, a little acid to help the stems take up water, and a tiny antimicrobial agent to keep bacteria from clogging the stems. This simple recipe covers all three in about thirty seconds.
The Basic Recipe
Mix this in a clean vase. It makes enough for one standard bouquet.
- 1 quart warm tap water
- 2 tablespoons white granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon or lime juice
- 1/4 teaspoon plain unscented household bleach
How to Use It
- Pour the warm water into a clean vase. Stir in the sugar and citrus juice until the sugar dissolves.
- Add the bleach and stir gently. This small amount is enough to slow bacterial growth—using more won’t help and may damage the stems.
- Trim about an inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle, then place the flowers in the vase right away.
- Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Submerged leaves rot quickly and feed bacteria.
- Refresh the water every two days with a fresh batch of flower food, and re-trim the stems each time.
🌼 Note: Make a new batch each time you change the water rather than storing extra. The sugar feeds flowers, but it also feeds bacteria once the solution sits too long.
Homemade flower food won’t revive blooms that are already past their prime. But if you start with healthy flowers, keep the vase out of direct sun, and move it away from ripening fruit on the counter, you’ll likely enjoy several more cheerful days—and the flowers will look great on you.
