- Blot, don't rub. If the mark is still wet, press a dry towel over it to soak up the excess. Rubbing presses ink deeper into the leather and is the most common reason stains never come out.
- Work from the outside in. For sensitive leather, mix the alcohol half-and-half with distilled water. Dip a fresh cotton swab, then roll it gently along the stain's outer edge, moving toward the center. Switch to a clean swab as soon as you see ink transfer.
- Let it dry, then repeat. Once the ink stops lifting, give the area ten to fifteen minutes to dry. If a shadow remains, repeat step 3 with a fresh swab. Persistence matters more than pressure.
- Condition afterward. Alcohol naturally strips moisture from leather, so this step isn't optional. Massage in a thin layer of leather conditioner and let it absorb overnight.
⚠️ Note: If a drop of water darkens the leather, you likely have unfinished or aniline leather. Alcohol-based methods can permanently mark this type, so stop here and contact a leather-care professional.
Not every ink stain will disappear completely—old marks and permanent markers can leave a ghost behind. But fresh ballpoint tip accidents on finished leather usually lift away with a little patience.
